A message from our practicum student, Ms. Russell

Hello families,

After the first week back at school I thought it would be a good time to introduce myself. My name is

Madison Russell and I will be a student teacher in your child’s Kindergarten classroom from now until

April. I am currently in my fourth year of the Bachelor of Education program at Mount Royal University

and this will be my last stepping stone before graduation. I am very excited to be working alongside Mrs.

Hughes at New Brighton School and am so very grateful as to how welcoming the Kindergarten

community has been!

A little bit about myself… I have lived in Calgary all my life and remember my years in elementary school

fondly, especially my Kindergarten experience. I have spent every summer in Invermere, B.C. where I

enjoy time by the lake, surfing, and spending time with my family. I have three younger siblings, a sister

and two brothers, whose hockey and ringette games are always fun to watch. I, on the other hand, prefer

water to be unfrozen as one of my passions is swimming. I have been teaching swimming lessons and

lifeguarding for the past four years now, which has kept me busy.

I am excited for all of the learning that is to come for not only the students, but myself as a teacher. I am

greatly looking forward to getting to know your child over the next few months and being a part of their

Kindergarten journey!

I also look forward to communicating with you, the parent community. Please stop and say hi!

My favourite place to spend the summer, Invermere, B.C.

This was me in kindergarten!

Today we had fun learning about the differences and similarities of Chinese New Year. Ask your child about something that is the same to a celebration that you celebrate. Here is some art we completed to go with our new learning.

On Monday, our Artist in Residence is coming to work with Kindergarten to make something super special that will hopefully last a lifetime.  You may have seen a $8.00 fee for the material.  The office has asked for you to please pay this money online in your Powerschool Account if possible.

Hello Families,

This week we completed our next round of Top Banana and we are looking forward to beginning our next rotation. This is an opportunity for your child to be the classroom special helper as well as show and tell presenter! A new name will be drawn each day until each child has a chance to share.

In Kindergarten, students have been getting to know one another. We are exploring how individual characteristics, talents and interests make us unique. Our Top Banana is invited to share a tradition or something special you as a family do together. This can include birthday celebrations, movie nights, family dinners, holidays, game nights, ect.

Some ideas include:
A photo of games you play during a family game night.
A photo of a special food eaten during a celebration.
A photo of significant places you visit like camping in the summer.
A photo of special clothing you wear for a holiday/celebration.

Please email your child's teacher with the subject "(Child Name) Top Banana " and attach a photo.
Spend some time with your child discussing your tradition so they are comfortable sharing about it and answering peer questions.

Please complete and send this in by January 30 at the latest, we will begin this round next week. We look forward to hearing all about the special traditions your family has!

Thank you,
Ms. Russell, Ms. Reef
Mrs. Hughes, and Mrs. Hellyer
